Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on Wednesday divulged that he stayed abroad for weeks because he needed to re-energise and strategise for the benefit of his people.
Speaking to KTN on the sidelines of the 5th Annual Devolution Conference, Joho stated that he needed time away to enable him to have “fresh thinking.”
“I travelled recently for work and took a vacation. I had been travelling out of the country too, way before I became a politician,” exclaimed the County boss.
The ODM deputy party leader also noted that while away, he had a proper functioning government to deal with issues that cropped up during his time away.
“I was not missing but away for other matters. During this time, I had a functioning government,” asserted Joho.
However, during his absence, County Executive Commissioners (CECs) grumbled over lack of proper accommodation and office space and factional fights over the transfer of sub-county or ward administrators cropped up.
Critics had aired their displeasure over the County boss’ extended vacation, urging him to end his “honeymoon” abroad and return to function effectively.
On his part, the governor maintained that there were structures that helped those who needed it.
“I have competent teams. We have structures that work [whether I am there or not],” affirmed Joho.
The governor mentioned that he is a human being and ought to be allowed to take time off to re-strategise.
“If anything, we are allowed to take holidays at times. We are not only politicians but also humans who are allowed to take holidays once in a while… and I thank God that I am blessed enough to pay for my travels,” he mentioned.
Joho flew back to the country to attend the wedding of Tanzanian musician Ali Kiba.
A source close to The Star divulged that while away the governor visited France, Spain and Australia during his time out in March.
